coffee

Did you know historians believe that Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee? The word coffee is derived from Kaffa, Ethiopia where the first coffee trees originated. According to Ethiopian legend, a goat herder noticed that his herd were frisky after consuming the beans. He tried them and liked them and noticed that they helped him stay alert while tending his goats. Word traveled among spice traders and soon coffee became popular in the Middle East and Europe. It isn't known for sure who first tried the beans as a drink, but many believe it to have been an Ethiopian.

By the 6th century Ethiopians were growing coffee. It soon became Ethiopia's most important crop and still is today.

Do you love a good cup of coffee? Are you like me and your day hasn't officially started until you get some joe flowing through your veins? If so, try the coffee from Gobena. The couple that started Gobena adopted a beautiful baby girl from Ethiopia and 100% of the profits benefit orphans through various charity programs.

Click here find out more and purchase some for yourself. You will not be disappointed, it is good stuff!!! :)

Way to endorse the coffee!!! We just finally brewed ours this morning. I am not much of a straight up coffee drinker though, so I didn't try it. Josh loved it though!

Too bad we hate coffee -- we are adopting a little girl from Ethiopia, what will I do when I don't like coffee? I thought maybe I should try drinking some now so I can gulp it down at the coffee ceremony without puking or making a horrible face, but I don't think it will happen... Just found your blog and can't wait to read more

this is so great! we've been supporting another Organic Fair Trade coffee supplier that supports orphans, as well - www.saintscoffee.com. I love seeing the variety and creativity of people giving back through businesses - and you are right...there is no comparison to such fresh quality and taste! I am blessed to be able to serve products like this at our ladies' Bible studies with a sign that tells them what they're drinking. It would cost me the same or more to buy a 'similarly labeled' coffee from my local Whole Foods Market, but it would still be inferior in quality and I wouldn't be feeding an orphan for a month! If anyone starts making bluejeans for a cause, please let me know because we certainly go through those at my house :-)

It's always good to hear of organizations helping out orphans. However, Gobena does give 100% of the proceeds to orphan care, whereas Saints coffee's website says they give almost 1/3 of their profits.

Gobena is very new, (less than 1 month old) and plans to present more specifics (including pictures) of the children that are being helped by the Gobena faithful!

Yes, Kaldi Coffee in Ethiopia is awesome! Do not leave Ethiopia without trying it. It's like Starbucks, except better, and costs about $0.75 for a caramel macchiato.
