shut up and do your job- ode to ER

Moody and I are some of the few that have faithfully watched ER since it first aired in 1994. That was the year that Moody and I got married, and one of the recommendations we received in our pre-marriage counseling was to not have a tv that first year as man and wife. We wanted to give it a try!

We went to my parents house every Thursday night at 9:00 to tune into the lives of Dr. Greene, Dr. Carter, Dr. Ross and Nurse Hathaway--oh how we have missed them. Somehow we learned to accept the new characters and have watched (on Tivo now as other shows have become priority) almost every episode. This season is the last and it is probably time, but I will miss the weekly trips to County General.

Dr. Romano was a gruff, surgeon on ER with few friends and a magnet for helicopters. One episode involved a couple in the ER that brought in their very sick child. They were exhausted and at the end of their rope. The mom was telling Dr. Romano all of the things that she had to do for her child and he looked up at her and said something like, "I understand this is a great load to deal with, you all are tired and it isn't what you imagined your life would look like, but sometimes you just need to shut up and do your job!"

We had small kids at that point and it just became a line Moody and I would say to each other. If one of the kids got up multiple times in the night and it was clear neither one of us were jumping out of bed, we might jokingly say "shut up and do your job". You get the drift. :)

Abe has been really sick this past week and has slept very little. We are exhausted, but this line popped into my head. You know how you just do what you have to do. He has wanted to be held 24/7 (he is asleep right now and I'm doing a one handed post-- sure makes the new Apple wheel look great about now) and I have had to let other things go, but I'm thankful for him, his precious desire for his mama and I'm leaning on the Lord to sustain me.

"He said to me,

'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Oh, Em, I look so forward to seeing an update on my sidebar from your team...

This is so true - sometimes we just need a dope slap and those true words to get us to focus and just do our job!

You're family is so truly amazing - And just like everything else, this time shall pass. Easy for me to say, right.

I think about you so much and have literally picked up the phone several times and grabbed my phonebook to call you. Then I chicken out because I think you're too busy and it's been so long that I don't know where to begin...

You are in my prayers - always.

Love you - xoxox Lor

Ah ha - I knew there was another reason we got the "feel good vibe" from you guys... ER!

I love it - Laura hates it. I love how every show is "the most explosive episode ever..."

Hang in there with Abe - please tell him we're thinking about him and praying for him.

And thanks for the humor link in there - my favorite quote - "I'll buy almost anything if it's shiny and made by Apple."

HA HA HA!!

GET BETTER SOON ABE!!

Good old ER. :0) I had to be a traitor and quit watching when George Clooney left, just wasn't the same for me.

I hope baby Abers feels better soon! I love the line...great advice for an expecting couple as well. :)

sorry Abe has been sick :(. And I love that line... I also have to repeat it to myself (as we too have been sick this weekend...). But, when we're parents, we don't have a choice, right? We just do it! May God bless you for your faithfulness, to him and to your sweet ones!

Praying sweet Abe gets better soon ... I am not a faithful ER fan since Dr. Ross left ... I will watch the final episodes when he returns though ... I may have to use that line when Maggie gets up every night about 3 times ...

Thanks for this... I too love ER. I started watching it in about 1998 in-between classes at Purdue Univeristy in the Union. Great memories :). Love, J

Praying for your strength & rest Emily. I felt like we battled every virus known to man in the month of January. I clung to my Bible and Jesus Calling devotional to survive the sleep deprivation. Sounds like precious Abe is clinging to his Momma sent straight from Heaven!

Hope Abe feels better soon!

I so needed to hear "Shutup & do your job!" yesterday. Thanks so much for posting it.

OK, we're adopting your line as ours now... You are such an encouragement, Em. I can hardly wait to spend time together again. xo

So, I'm pretty much using your line daily now. I'm amazed at how much strength you have! You are an encouragement!
