pilates for water

I knew this whole fundraising effort would be a faith journey, an opportunity to SEE Him work, move in the hearts of His people and I was absolutely right.  We have only just begun to share the story, and I have been so humbled already.

Please take the time to read below.  This is taken from my dear friend, Mary Lynn Saxon's, sub campaign page.  She is a gifted pilates instructor, I know, as Moody and I both took from her prior to the Lord placing Africa on our hearts and then needing to make necessary budget cuts. :)  It is beautifully written and straight from the heart.  She is using her gifts and talents to help those in Dube Bute.  I'm beyond grateful that the Lord allows my family to do life with hers.  It is a gift.
"Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come."
Revelation 4:8 (Tuesday July 6 Dusk)
"The hand of the Lord was upon me and He brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley...He asked me, 'Son of man can these bones live?' I said, 'Oh sovereign Lord you alone know.' This is what the sovereign Lord says to these bones,'I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life...I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.' So I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood upon their feet - a vast army."
Ezekiel 37:1-10 (Tuesday July 6 Bedtime)
"Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"
John 11:40 (Friday morning July 9)
July 6, 2010
These were defining scripture and moments in my life that God allowed me to experience and I will never be the same. I witnessed the hand of God touch down on Earth in an irrigation ditch in Gunnison, Colorado and from this point forward my heart, soul and mind will have a new viewpoint and motivation. (For more details on how God raised my best friend's son from the dead, please visit http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/goreotteson for the full story of God raising Gore Otteson after being without oxygen for 55 minutes. You must enter "Goresky" for password.)
God in His amazing grace allowed me to be there with Amy and her children and experience His presence in a way I will never fully be able to explain. But as a result I want to thank Him the rest of my life. What does this mean? Somehow - someway living beyond myself to forever agree with Him that He is HUGE, PERFECT, MIGHTY, and STILL IN THE BUSINESS OF PERFORMING MIRACLES!
"As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."
Proverbs 27:17
I have been blessed with some outstanding friends in my life and apparently God likes to sharpen me by their presence my world. Two in particular, Emily Alexander and Amy Otteson, have these giant empathetic hearts that love Jesus with all their heart, all their strength and all their mind...yet they love life as well...and make it fun. They challenge me to be a better friend, mother, wife, "person" and follower of Jesus. Their desires and passions that fire them up are even similiar. I had longed for that passion they had for "the least of these". I am often impressed at how the Lord weaves each of our lives and stories in such a way that if we are following Him, they all fit together to form a beautiful tapestry that brings Him glory. In the wake of witnessing God give life back to Amy in Colorado, I come home to God giving life and a grand vision to our dear friends Moody and Emily in Texas...or shall I say Ethiopia? Emily has had a heart for the people in Africa ever since she set her sights on adoption which resulted in Abe. This precious boy rocked all of our worlds with his smile and luscious locks - but to witness how this adoption has affected Emily and Moody is, to say the least, inspiring, humbling and eye opening. They have only drawn closer to the Lord and they have only fallen deeper in love with Ethiopia as a result. November 2009 along came Eyasu into their household who melted not only my 2 little girls' hearts but mine and Tommy's as well. We will forever be singing, "Pants on the ground, pants on the ground..." and mimicking his animated voice and moves with everything we do! Still, I watched, loved, and admired the Alexander's passion to serve the people of Africa from an arm's distance. It was humbling to the point of wondering, "What is wrong with me that I don't want to adopt or at least give up everything to serve His people over there?"...Until July 6, 2010 when I experienced the holiness of God and His amazing grace as He peeled back the scales on my eyes and I said, to quote Isaiah, "Woe to me! I am ruined...I have seen the King, the Lord Almighty."
As Emily and I caught up after a summer apart of experiencing what each of us did in June and July, my heart was broken and my heart was open for the first time as I heard her talk about Eyasu's village, Dube Bute, his uncle that relinquished him and their lack of clean water. I just could not believe how lukewarm and comfortable I had been all this time while God's people, His church, were suffering on the other side of the globe. How the Lord has not spit me out before now is beyond me, but one thing I know is that He has answered my prayer to break my heart for the things that break His heart. I have a long way to go to climb out of this lukewarm bath I like to linger in but He has shown me that I have a few loaves and fish that I can offer up to serve His multitude. If I have nothing else I have willingness, faith, prayer and pilates. I have been offering free Pilates classes this past year at my church knowing it was out of obedience as it is one thing I can do...but all the while knowing there had to be more to it. Thankfully after this past summer God revealed to me, "Pilates for Water" - if each person in your class made a donation everytime they came to class and treated it like a fee, then we could start a fund for Dube Bute, Ethiopia. And if each of those people told a friend, God could move hearts to give so Eyasu's village can have clean water. I am not a details girl, I am a pray and have faith my God can take my meager loaves and fishes and feed multitudes girl. I typically leave the logistics to my sweet husband but in this case I leave them to this remarkable organization called Glimmer of Hope who gives 100% of all donations directly the projects in Dube Bute. Even the PayPal transaction fee is covered by the Glimmer endowment! Please watch the video below to learn more about Glimmer of Hope.
Will you help me build 2?

abey in ethiopia

I am going to try to start recapping our trip.  It will be hard to put into words just how amazing our two weeks in Ethiopia were for our team and our family.  One of the biggest concerns for me as mom, was how the little boys would do.  I was worried about Abe physically and Eyasu emotionally.

Both did great, but this post is about Abe!  He was his sweet, smiley self for the whole trip.  He never cried on the LONG plane rides and was a joy during the days.  He couldn't ever figure out the whole sleep thing unfortunately though.  Made for a tired mama, but he seemed to hang in there on all fronts.

I loved how new friends in his life discovered his love for the camera and how he will squeel in delight when one came near him!

We did discover that international travel and life in Ethiopia aren't geared towards someone with disabilities.  Many stairs, and few elevators made for much Abey holding.  Fine now that he is 25 pounds, will get harder as he gets heavier.  Just part of the journey, part of His refining us.  So thankful he was there with us, to experience his birthcountry.

Sad to be back to reality honestly.  My heart just aches to be there. Excited about new projects, and planning the next EthiopiaSmile trip.

ps- great story to go with the first picture.  One of my favorite from the entire trip..........will share soon

sound of hope

Can you hear hope?  I know that I did on a dirt road, while riding a horse, heading into my son, Eyasu's village.
If you look closely, you will see the emotion of the moment came over me in a wave of tears.  Hope.  These beautiful people were singing praises to the Father because we came and they now had hope.  We hadn't given them a drop of clean water yet, a new building to educate their children, a new clinic to provide for their health needs or a vet clinic to care for their animals, yet they were so JOYFUL to have us come. Hope. Hope of yet unseen. Hope.

We will return. We will give them the very things we promised.  We do need your help though.

$284,000 is a large sum of money.  Money we don't have just sitting there to give.  It is change to the One that called us there.  I'm excited to see the community that He raises up to help make this hope a reality.  I know it will come from many. Every dollar adds up, every gift matters.  We are humbled by each and every one, knowing they come from a real place of sacrifice.

Click here to join the team! Anyone can create a sub campaign page.  This is His project, not our own. More pics and stories from the trip coming soon.

Hope for Dube Bute

Okay - I am a day late posting this for Team Alexander. And I'll admit it - I got caught up staring at all the pictures of our beautiful daughter they sent us! So here is the text message I woke up to yesterday morning:

Ok, can't put into words how amazing yesterday was as we spent the day in Dube Bute, the kebele Eyasu spent his first two years of his life. We were greeted at the road by hundreds of people. They were singing and praising the Lord that we came. They have hope!

we rode about an hour on horseback to get to the kebele center. Finalized project! Praise the Lord that we will be able to provide 18 clean water points, 8 new classrooms (2 new buildings), a new health clinic, renovate existing building used for healthcare workers (one cared for Eyasu when he was so sick) and the first ever vet clinic in the kebele. This is a farming community. Should have fundraising page live in the next few days!

Love you friends!

Okay - so because I am a late slacker - the fundraising page is already up! I won't even try summarize it for you - just go read it here and be amazed (or click the banner below) - it's incredible what they have going on and I can't wait to watch God work in this. It's gonna be BIG!

TEAM UPDATE: Korah

Abe didn't sleep much the night before our visit to Korah. I threw myself a decent ole pity party about 3 a.m. I remember having the thought that my life was hard, harder than I wanted. I wanted sleep, was that too much to ask?? Driving through the streets, tears streamed down my cheeks as I was so ashamed Hard? Really Emily? Hard? Oh the condition of my heart.

I have heard many will say that Korah will wreck you. They were all right. Korah, is a city of outcasts within Addis. I have spoken to many that have spent their entire lives in Addis Ababa and they had NEVER even heard of Korah. It is in the west part of the city and is inhabited by lepers, HIV positive, and others society doesn't care for at all. The very least of the least of these. It is located next to Alert Hospital (treats those with leprosy) and the city trash dump. It is very desolate, yet we saw so much joy.

We met up with Cherrie Cornish, a delightful woman that has also been wrecked for this place. This is her 4th trip since April. She helped us greatly with the logistics on the dental day. We met Sammy, a precious soul that was raised in Korah and is now working hard to help better the lives of it's residents. We were able to treat many patients dental needs and also do crafts with many of the children.

A highlight was getting to go on 2 home visits. We walked down the streets holding hands with the local children. Both homes we saw women, too sick to forage in the city trash dump any longer. They now have their children do the work for them so they may eat and find a way to pay the 100 birr rent on their "homes". I am so thankful that Hill and Wick were able to be with me. I think it was a very pivotal moment for them, I know it was for me.

As we were leaving the second home, the heavens parted and down came the hardest, coldest rain. We started running in the rain back to the church. We were soaking wet and our shoes were covered in mud. It was simply an image that I won't soon forget!

We then all walked to Alert to purchase hand made items from their store. Sammy didn't think a larger group had ever visited Alert at once and he was pretty sure that our group of 65 provided the shops largest single day total ever. Praise God. The sweet man that sits and weaves door mats had a smile from ear to ear when he heard that all of his goods were sold out! We all walked back to the church with messenger bags, scarves, crosses, animals........etc in our arms.

I wasn't able to go on the tour of the trash dump as I had to return to the little boys. A few vans did go and from what I hear have some great video footage to share! Have I mentioned that Kurt Neale (guy that married us) is here making an incredible documentary? He is working so hard to capture each story. I pray that it will be a great blessing to many once complete. We are very grateful that he is here as so many things take place and he is getting as many as possible.

Off to dinner.........more soon I hope.

Thank you for praying. We feel it! Please keep them coming.

TEAM UPDATE: October 4

Text message from Emily and team - BUSY DAY!

Monday, October 4, 2010 - 12:08 PM
What a day! 900 patients came and saw about 400. Was painful to not be able to treat all of them. Team worked SO hard.

The Lord provided for all and it was just amazing to see it all come together.

Korah tomorrow.

Still no sign of bag. Forgot to mention a laptop we carried for a Dr. here was in it!! :(

Wick may get some clothes from Ethiopia and we may be buying a laptop.

TOMORROW'S PLANS
Where: Dental service at Korah, a city of outcasts foraging in the trash dump.
Pray: Appropriate treatment space, number of patients, patient flow, safety for providers, healing for patients.

Have amazing privilege of doing a TOMS shoe drop for the kids at Korah. Pray for all the details and that they would each feel loved as they receive a brand new pair of shoes.
